How to live longer

With this being a health & fitness blog, it’s reasonable to talk about living longer.

Yeah, looking & feeling good is important.

Getting fitter & stronger is also essential to people’s goals.

But what if we could say that strength training could help you live longer.

I’ve always believed that it probably does.

But now, there is more research to say it does.

A recent study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that 30 to 60 minutes of muscle-strengthening activity every week is linked to a 10% to 20% lower risk of death from all causes, and from heart disease and cancer.

People think of strength training as young blokes bench pressing & screaming at one another.

But it’s way more varied than that.

Activities such as carrying your shopping bags, gardening, bodyweight home workouts, resistant bands are also strength training sessions.

This study focuses mainly on the activity benefits of strength training.

Yet if you add in a nutritious diet of high protein & veg, this stat is certain to improve further.

I am so enthusiastic about what strength training can do that I’ll train this way for the rest of my life.

I’ve been doing it for 12-15 years consistently now and aim to be doing it till I’m hopefully in my 80’s.

The importance of health has been promoted recently.

And people have been more conscious of doing things to live a healthy & happy life.

But if you still aren’t fired up to do a weight/strength session this week….let me tempt you with a few more benefits.

Builds muscle
Burns body fat
Improves posture
Boosts metabolism
Lowers inflammation
Increases bone density
Increases self-confidence
Reduces risk of injury & falls
Makes you stronger and fitter
Improves the cardiovascular system

Strength training should be a non-negotiable in your armoury.

The study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine discovered 30-60 minutes a week is enough to lower the risk of death & serious illness.

If we can complete 3 x 45 minutes sessions this week you’ve nailed this target.

Plus, you will have started to attain some of the other benefits as well.

And you’ll be three small steps closer to your goals.

Get those sessions completed this week!
