Diet or exercise

It’s a bit of an old dispute.

Some reckon that it’s just a better diet needed to get in shape and be healthy.

This is why a lot of slimming clubs, diet plans, and shake meal replacement companies do so well.

The flip side of that is that a lot of people believe they can exercise their way to healthiness and leanness.

This is the reason for so many new types of exercise classes and programs.

I’ve tried doing both separately, I’ve just eaten healthily and not trained in the gym due to being too busy.

The result was I felt ok energy-wise as I was eating nutritious foods.

But body fat levels didn’t move, I lost muscle and my strength and fitness plummeted.

So, diet alone = flop

I’ve also gone the other way; my diet has gotten sloppy and I have had one too many nights out for a few weeks and food choices slipped massively.

Results were…

I felt rubbish due to the junk being consumed, my body fat levels stayed the same, probably didn’t lose muscle due to being in the gym a lot, but strength & fitness plateaued.

So, training alone = flop

Yet, when I nail my diet AND training.

What I notice then is another level.

I get the benefits of both from above but with none of the downsides.

More energy
More muscle
Less body fat
Huge increase in strength and fitness.
And a body shape I can be proud of rather than hiding.

I know some reading this now will say well it’s not possible to be perfect with diet and exercise all of the time.

And I totally agree.

It probably needs a smart balance for a busy lifestyle.

What I’ve found optimal to get those benefits but still live a normal life is as follows.

  • Strength train 2-4 times a week
  • Take 8-10 thousand steps a day
  • Drink 2-3 litres water a day
  • Sleep 7-9 hours a night
  • Eat lean protein and vegetables at 80% of my meals.

Which leaves enough wiggle room for a bit of enjoyment.

So, to wrap up the debate of what is more important for a health makeover, diet or exercise?

The bad news is = it’s both.

But the good news is you only need to do both about 80% perfectly.

Which after a while seems like a doddle to do and can soon become part of your normal daily habits.

Know you can put your worries, frustrations and confusion to bed and just use my actions that are proven to work.
