The weird stat I saw the other day…

I was flicking through social media the other day and saw this weird stat.

Apparently, if a room started filling with smoke, most people wouldn’t do anything.

Even if they had no idea where the smoke was coming from.

Sounds ridiculous, right?

Well… in 1968, researchers Bibb Latané and John Darley ran an experiment on “diffusion of responsibility.”

I promise it won’t be boring, so keep going with me!

They placed individuals in a room, either alone or with actors who were in on the test.

Then, they pumped smoke into the room.

What did the actors do? Nothing.

They just sat there like everything was normal.

And what did the test subjects do?

Despite clearly feeling uneasy… they also did nothing—if they were in a group.

When people were alone, 75% got up and raised the alarm.

But when they were with others who ignored the smoke? Only 10% did anything.

That’s how much we value groupthink.

Even when our instincts tell us something’s off, we hesitate to take action if no one else is doing it.

And this isn’t just in experiments.

Ever seen people walk past someone struggling in public, assuming someone else will help?

Same thing.

But here’s the interesting part…

This also applies to getting in shape.

People know they should exercise, eat well, and care for themselves.

But when everyone around them is skipping workouts, grabbing quick meals, and getting by on five hours of sleep…

They do the same.

Even though they know they should be doing things differently.

They wait.

They assume they’ll start “when life calms down.”

They think they’ll just “eat better” without actually changing their habits.

And they fall into the same cycle as everyone else.

Feeling sluggish, carrying excess weight, and wondering why nothing changes.

But here’s the thing…

The people who actually get in shape aren’t following the crowd.

They’re doing the simple things, consistently:

✅ Resistance training 3x per week to build muscle and get stronger.
✅ Walking 8-10k steps a day to stay active and burn more calories effortlessly.
✅ Drinking 2-3 litres of water daily to improve energy, focus, and recovery.
✅ Sleeping 7-9 hours a night because without it, everything else suffers.
✅ Eating 3 high-protein meals a day to fuel their body and keep hunger under control.

These aren’t extreme changes.

They’re the basics.

And when you do them week after week, results happen.

The problem?

Most people don’t do them—because most people around them aren’t doing them.

But here’s the opportunity…

You get to be different.

You get to be the person who takes action.

The person who doesn’t wait for “one day” or “the right time.”

Because that time is now.

So whether you’re already making progress or just getting started—keep going.

Stick to the basics.

Show up.

Be the example.

And watch what happens.

It’s your move.
