Burning calories but not losing weight

I saw a clip the other day of someone bragging they’d burned 10,000 calories in a day.

Dead serious.

Watch held up.

Big grin.

Comments full of “fair play”.

And I just thought… here we go again.

Because I’ve seen a softer version of that play out loads of times.

Someone comes in with a new Apple Watch.

Or a Garmin.

Or whatever the latest tracker is.

They’re buzzing.

“Burned 3,000 yesterday.”
“Smashing it this week.”
“Never moved this much in my life.”

And to be fair… they probably are doing more.

Training harder.

Getting steps in.

Making an effort.

That part’s good.

Then a week or two later…

“Not losing anything.”
“Don’t get it.”
“I’m burning loads every day.”

That’s where it starts to unravel.

Because the number they’re trusting the most…

Is the one that’s the least accurate.

There was research out of Stanford University that looked at popular fitness trackers.

Not one of them nailed calorie burn.

The best was still well off.

The worst nearly doubled it.

So when your watch says 600 calories burned…

It might be 400.

It might be less.

It’s not lying.

It’s guessing.

And you’re treating the guess like a receipt.

Now add the other side of the equation.

Studies from places like National Institutes of Health show people underreport what they eat.

Often by 20 to 50 percent.

Again, not on purpose.

You just forget things.

The handful here.

The extra there.

The stuff that “doesn’t count”.

So you’ve got this perfect storm:

You think you’ve burned more than you have.
You think you’ve eaten less than you have.

And you sit there wondering why nothing’s changing.

I’ve had the same thing myself.

I wear an Oura ring.

It’s good for sleep & step tracking.

Recovery monitoring.

Patterns over time.

But the calorie burn number?

I don’t build anything around it.

Because I’ve tested it.

I’ve had days and weeks where it says I’ve burned loads… and my body doesn’t agree.

Weight stays the same.

Sometimes goes up.

That’s when you realise pretty quickly…

The number isn’t the truth.

It’s a rough estimate.

And if you lean on it too much, it can quietly slow you down.

Those big burn numbers feel good.

They give you a sense of progress.

They make it easier to justify eating more.

“That workout earned this.”
“I’ve got calories to play with.”

But if the burn is inflated… that extra food isn’t covered.

And that’s where fat loss stalls.

So what actually works?

Not chasing big burn numbers.

Not trying to “earn” food.

It’s about tightening the gap between what’s really going on and what you think is going on.

That means one of two things.

You either track your food properly for a short period.

Just 2 weeks.

No guessing.

No missed bits.

No “that doesn’t count”.

Or…

You keep it simple and structured.

Same sort of meals.

Similar portions.

Protein in each meal.

Snacks under control.

Not perfect.

Just consistent.

Then leave your watch to do what it’s actually good at.

Tracking trends.

Steps going up.

Sleep improving.

Training consistency.

Not telling you how much you’ve “earned” to eat.

If your progress has stalled, try this.

For the next 14 days:

Ignore exercise calories completely.

Don’t eat them back.

Keep your food tight and repeatable.

Then see what happens.

Because the method can change.

The honesty can’t.

And once you close that gap…

Things start moving again.
